James is a seasoned pharmaceutical executive with over 20 years of experience in Japan’s healthcare industry. As President and Founder of 3C Advisors GK, a Tokyo-based strategic advisory firm, he partners with global and local organizations to navigate the complexities of the Japanese market and drive impactful results.

Throughout his career, James has held senior leadership roles at global pharmaceutical companies including AbbVie, Merck KGaA, and Pfizer, earning recognition for advancing healthcare access and policy. He served as President of the Japan operations at both Merck KGaA and AbbVie, where he led large-scale organizational strategy and execution. At Pfizer, he launched Japan’s first vaccine division and played a key role in securing historic reimbursement policies for pediatric vaccines. His tenure at Merck KGaA deepened his expertise in market access and government affairs, while at AbbVie he oversaw strategic initiatives across multiple therapeutic areas.

James holds a BA in Psychology from Hampden-Sydney College, an MA in Japanese Studies from the University of Michigan, and an MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management. He is also a certified executive coach and a member of the Marshall Goldsmith 100 Coaches, dedicated to mentoring emerging Japanese leaders and guiding expatriate executives in navigating Japan’s unique business landscape.
